Story of Kathleen Leary

Kathleen Leary, 66, was a mother of four and a grandmother. She was from Norway House Cree Nation in Manitoba, and worked as the reserve’s executive director of health services.

Winnipeg Police found her with injuries to her upper body in her Winnipeg home on May 19, 2015. She later died of her injuries.

On May 21, 2015, Winnipeg Police charged a youth with second-degree murder. The charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder.

The youth was known to her and cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to three years on Sept. 5, 2018.

Since his arrest he has gone through counseling with First Nations Elders and family, the judge ordered the rest of his sentence be served at home with his mother under conditional circumstances.
