Story of Deidre Marie Michelin

Michelin is remembered as an energetic young woman with a sense of humour that could brighten a room. She was fond of traditional crafting, enjoyed baking, and was a wonderful cook.

On January 20, 1993 Michelin reached out to police for help. The nearest RCMP detachment, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, was located over 160 kilometers away.

A lack of Innu-aimun and Inuktitut-speaking dispatchers meant that callers often had to relay their emergencies in English. Language barriers and remote emergency response affect many Indigenous women and girls today.
